Job description

General context of the project

General context of the project

Greece has been a longstanding country of first arrival and transit for refugees and migrants.   Asylum-seekers at the Reception and Identification Centres (RICs) on the Greek Islands have to cope with hard-living conditions. Having survived dangerous journeys in search of safety in Europe, they have been trapped on the Islands for years, exacerbating feelings of insecurity, loneliness and hopelessness.

Following the relocation of many recognized refugees to the mainland, currently, it hosts approximately1743people, of the 1900 asylum seekers and refugees residing on Lesvos.

The majority of the population are from Afghanistan (68%), Somalia (11%) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (5%) Women account for 19% of the population and children for 27%..

The infrastructural works taking place during the last month within the temporary camp of Mavrovouni, in Lesvos, suggests that the official announcements that wants the new MPRIC to be operational by mid-2022, will most likely be disattended.

On Lesvos island, INTERSOS has been present since September 2020, when an emergency team was deployed in the first 48h after Moria fires to assess the most urgent needs of the affected population and to set up an efficient crisis response.

In order to address this gap, in early 2021, INTERSOS established a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support intervention aimed at providing comprehensive psychosocial care to vulnerable women and to enhance the general mental health response.

INTERSOS intervention targets women and men who belong to vulnerable groups presenting signs or psychological distress, particularly those who have survived gender-based violence and/or are the sole or primary caregivers of a dependent family member.

The MHPSS INTERSOS Team, composed of Psychologists, Case Managers and Protection Officers ensures that the mental health program adheres to a holistic and rights-based approach. The aim of the intervention, in the frame of full case management support, is to provide comprehensive psychosocial care to the persons, through individual and group sessions along with psychiatric care and high-quality referrals of the beneficiaries to other services and support.

INTERSOS team in Lesvos, providing mental health support to women survivors of gender-based violence, has built on its capacity to treat people with self-harming behaviors, active suicidality and PTSD symptoms, while taking all the steps to prevent or respond to Gender-based violence.

In 2022, INTERSOS will continue providing psychosocial support to vulnerable women, whilst opening their services to vulnerable men.
